Great location, great food, great patio ! Great staff, Great owner ! They should open a special restaurant, just for breakfast ! Jeanne's Breakfast Sandwich, enough for 2 people

I haven't been here in ages. It's almost as if I've never been. Linda H. and I got a seat by the window. I thought I'd try the signature hot turkey sandwich. Funny how stuffing in any restaurant is never as good as the way you or your favorite relative's Thanksgiving stuffing is. I could so without the bread, not just for added calories but it's just ok. The turkey part is delicious. I like the inside of this place, all the nooks, crannies, and exits. A woodsy style bathroom. I can't wait to try the revamped patio.

Very friendly staff serving so-so food. The mushroom prime rib sandwich was OK, the Juicy Lucy was tasteless with no seasoning. The cheese was bland. The tomatoes were unripe. The fries were iffy. Again, nice folks, just not great food.

The only thing Irish about Patrick McGovern's is its name. This place is nothing special it's just your typical sports bar with bland, albeit edible, bar food. The times that I've eaten and had drinks here have always been before the occasional Wild game or concert, and I'll say the food is below average. Despite their name I've never noticed a single traditional Irish dish on the menu, I think it's just called a "pub" to lure in the suburbanites who don't know any better. I guess I fell into that trap a few times myself. I've had their burger, pub sandwiches, and "famous" turkey sandwich and every time I've been less than impressed. I'm pretty sure that the majority of the food here comes from the freezer, save yourself some money and stop at TGI Fridays before you come downtown. The four times I've been here it seems like it's a struggle to get your waiters attention, it's almost like they don't want to take my money. The only redeeming quality is that it's a better deal than the food inside the Xcel. That being said, there are a number of better restaurants within blocks of here that offer much better food at similar prices, save yourself the aggravation of dealing with the inattentive wait staff and try somewhere else.

Service and food are average. Location is great before an event at Xcel. I am no longer local, but I always stopped in every summer when I'd visit so that I could get a walleye sandwich. I always thought theirs was the best. It's still above average, but I've found a better one. I'm one of those people who sits at the bar and likes to chat with the bartender or other bar guests and most places that is something fun to do. This last time I went, though there were only 2 other people at the bar, the bartender wasn't chatty despite not being very busy. I'll probably still stop in for some walleye when I'm in town, but I'll have to remember to come with a friend or family in the future so I can have some conversation.

I've always been a fan of the idea of this place. The space is fantastic. The service is fine. The food is not that good compared to other nearby options. The place really needs a menu overhaul. If the food were better it would be a slam dunk for me. Amazing patio. Even in the winter!

Nice Patio. Best Au gratin potato's around!

Patio nice, wish they'd get some better local beers on tap. Current selection same as last summer. Nachos were average at best.

Great burgers, really fast service despite how packed they were before a Wild game. Waitress was really pleasant. Our food came out in 5 minutes, granted we just ordered burgers. We didn't have to wait long for refills either. I recommend coming here before games.

Patricks is the place to be before a Wild Game. Good beer on tap, some solid bar food and lots of big screens in the dining room. We got here a little over two hours before game time and it was perfect timing, we got a spot right away and the wait was up to forty five minutes just ten minutes later. Apparently two hours out is when everyone and their mom shows up. They had some pretty tasty sounding warm cocktails which would be perfect for a cold Minnesota hockey day. The BF got the hot buttered rum and it was fricken delicious. It was like ice cream but obviously very warm. I thought about getting the fireball spiked cider, but couldn't resist going straight for the sweet child of vine. Anyway it's a good option that I'll definitely keep in mind in the future. Our food hit the spot and came out in about fifteen minutes which was impressive considering how busy it was. I had the Texas BBQ turkey sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was very saucy and came with a generous amount of meat, as well as some bacon, lettuce and an onion ring. The heaping pile of fries was totally worth the two bucks for up charge. My boyfriend had the buffalo chicken sandwich which didn't have nearly as much sauce as mine did, I'd say I got the yummier deal.

This is a great place to have a beer but the food and service are par at best. Had a Reuben, the meat was tough and the bread was soggy. I asked the waiter what they had on tap and he pointed to the drink menu and said "you can read them all on that menu right there". He didn't seem very pleasant (maybe he was having a bad day). I like the building and the atmosphere! The place seems to have potential to be great! Seems like they rely just having a good location like another reviewer mentioned. It was a Saturday evening and there were lots of seats available. I would go there with friends to have a drink, but not order dinner.

We Steelers transplants, and this is one of the best Steelers spots to be! Great atmosphere, awesome people, very fun times! The whole top floor is taken over on game day. Complete with "Jag Off!", "Heath!!!", And other heart warming chants. The food was pretty good. I had the turkey philly and sweet potato fries, and I'd recommend it. The drink selection was pretty good. Wine, domestic and import beers. Hard liquor selection is good, but the PPP was flat for a few of the mixed drinks we had. We'll be back. Both For Steelers games and to hang out for.

Bartender was beyond rude. She literally yelled at me that the menu was cash only. Never once smiled. I understand she may have been overwhelmed with the crowds but the management should have staffed the bars accordingly. Chicken was ok, French fries were cold. I wouldn't go back here.

So Sunday we ended up going to mcgoverns for drinks. It ended up being some surprise party. I ended up being surprised that it was a wild game night. I normally stay away from all the locations close to the energy center when the wild play. It turns into a sea of drunks. Well boy was i surprised when i had to pay event parking to just go get a drink. The event parking price was not too bad at $10 but i was ticked off because they did not accept debit or credit card. the guy was like we do take checks. lol. So we got to mcgoverns and our first server was good. We got a nice Guinness in a clean glass and then we ordered the coconut shrimp and the cheese curds. Well here is where the issues begin. The shrimp was very rubbery like they cooked them while they were still frozen and one of them had a strong fish like odor that tells me the shrimp were no where near fresh. They tasted like it was the last bag of shrimp that fell behind the rack a year ago and the cook found it while cleaning and cooked it up frozen. The cheese curds where very dry like they left them in the fryer too long and some of them did not even taste like cheese. They had a large amount of salt on them to get you thirsty so you buy more drinks. We found out the rest of the party was upstairs so we paid our check and went upstairs it was very nice upstairs as far as not loud and not too many drunk people. We enjoyed several drink in glass. We had a great server she was very very quick and made sure our drinks were full. Then it started the wild game was over and a sea of drunks made it to the bar. Before you know it the place was sooo loud no one could hear each other and you had people so packed in they were literally nut to butt. Most of the people walking in should not of even been served. All the plastic cups were being passed around and our server kept me happy by making sure i got a glass every time. The place was filled with all types of characters wearing Christmas lights around their bodies and colored hair and such. She really tried to keep me there and she got a 40% tip. The bathrooms in the place were dirty i was afraid to step in them with my clean shoes. My wife told me that the womens bathroom ran out of toilet paper and their was a hole line of people waiting to use the bathroom with no toilet paper. She went to the bar and told them that the womens bathroom has no toilet paper and there was a line and the bartender told her " so what do you want me to do" A pub with the name Patrick McGoverns you expect it to be an Irish put. At least thats what they claim they are on saint patricks day. For an Irish put it sure has more of a sports bar feel to it. I did not feel that the place was irish enough. This place i feel is a good place of people who just want to get trashed before or after a game. Other than that i would never bring a girl here on a date or business partners for lunch. The only reason i did not give this place 1 star was because of the waitress we had. Other than the bathrooms being dirty for the amount of drunk people here the place was kinda clean for the amount of drunk people.

We sat on the patio with a big group of friends. Food was really good. Service was good too. Had a great atmosphere. Parking can be challenging. There is a lot in the back, but it's really small. If you do get access, be sure to ask the server for the code to get out. Someone wrote in marker on the machine to enter the code, but someone forgot to tell us it. It wasn't on the ticket. We had to go back in and get it from someone who worked there. Definitely will be back.

We found our place that we will frequent for Steelers games. As I walked my way up to the 2nd floor, local Steelers fans (aka SFOM Steelers Fans of Minnesota) belted the Steeler Polka --it definitely reminded of strolling through the Strip District back in da 'burgh. As I searched for a pair of vacant seats, the entire floor was decked with fans sporting black and yellow. For food, along with the regular menu selection, they offered 3 different Pittsburgh dishes. We decided on the sharing Nachos with jalapenos and Strip District Stacker (Hot ham & provolone cheese topped with French fries, fried egg, cole slaw, tomato & on Ciabatta with Mayo on the side and a side of cole slaw. This was more than enough...and to wash all the yumminess down Kettle One Bloody Marys. Throughout the game, there was raffle gifts for Steelers flair and fund raiser raffle tickets for Steelers jerseys, fans chanting "Heath", "Defense" and even "D-Fense" while Steelers fans sang along to the Polka song during each quarter. We are fans and definitely will be back, even if the Steelers loss...next time I want to try to the Irish Stew.

Stopped in for St. P's Day morning and got a Snakebite (Guinness and Angry Orchard cider) at 10am to start the day. This is a tradition for my room mate's family to which I was a guest or this probably wouldn't have been my first choice. For the holiday, everything - drinks AND food - was cash only which I found to be pretty inconvenient, but I suppose it's understandable when it gets ridiculously busy. Unfortunately, we went into the second bar off the patio and it smelled like urine. The bathrooms are normal and seemed fairly clean so I'm not sure where it was coming from.

Pretty good food and decor with a friendly staff. The tap beer selection is the same stuff you see everywhere, so craft connoisseurs will be disappointed. Yes, the patio is nice- so if you're more about ambiance than the food itself, you'll dig it. The music? Don't even get me started... many times that I've stopped in they were playing oldies pop, i.e. "Sherry Baby" and all that other annoying stuff that should have stayed in the '60s, imho. It has driven me out and over to Reid's more than once. The name can lead one to assume this is an Irish pub, but they told me they aren't- despite the "i" in "Patrick" being dotted with a clover and having both a Dublin Grinder and Irish stew on the menu. Corned beef and cabbage is offered on Wednesdays. Like most of the bars near the Xcel, they're mainly popular because of their location and patio, not the food itself.

A great place to hang out. Irish stew is really good but we've had it twice now and both times it was not hot. The potato skins were the best I've ever had. Service was delightful. We'll be back. My 20 something kids didn't want to go because they thought it would be all older people. The crowd was quite young. They would fit right in too.

This review is based on one visit, so take my rating with that in mind. I've been using Yelp (thanks, Yelp) to try to locate local spots that have fish & chips. I'm on a mission. I read that McGovern's had good fish & chips, but noticed that their claim to fame was their turkey preps. So I put off my sampling of the fish in favor of trying their hot, open-faced turkey sammich. Now, our friends have had bad things to say about this place. They ordered stuff that was not the Turkey Manhattan. But holy Mike, that was the best Turkey Manhattan I've ever had. They must make their own bread, because it was served on a big bun that tasted great and fresh. The dressing was very flavorful, and not so loaded with sage as to make it inedible (this seems to be a shortcut that restaurants like Key's use. Create a sage explosion, and nobody notices that your dressing sucks). Skin-in mashed potatoes, and a gravy that may have come out of a jar, but was so good I didn't care. It's a huge plate, and I still have half of my order sitting in the fridge. That kinda stuff reheats well. In the meantime, my wife ordered a cheeseburger. She always does that in new restaurants because, really, who can ruin a cheeseburger? She gobbled it up, and they cooked it to order for her. So, for those two menu items, the turkey Manhattan and the loaded cheeseburger, it's two thumbs up from my wife and me. I want to return to try their fish & chips, but don't want to be disappointed given how awesome that lunch was.

McGovern's may be experiencing some growing pains and changes....stopped in recently and some of my familiar servers/bartenders are missing.....Seems like it is getting a little bigger and popular and basically becoming just average and not doing anything unique or different or to standout. I will have to go back during football time and hook up with the Steeler Fans to see if I can recapture some of my love for McGovern's but currently they are just another average place to grab a beer and sandwich....I wouldn't try to get a handcrafted cocktail or anything beyond bar pour here as it is more about speed and getting the crowds coming into the city looking for a quick bite before an event---vs.--- really getting to know and catering to the locals. It is attracting a little younger of a crowd than i remember also. The atmosphere is still pretty dang neat with various little spots to dine/drink and a lot of exposed brick and the big ass patio is really cool.

Reasonably priced imported beer. I love Smithwicks and it's great to see it on tap. They have free popcorn and the staff are prompt and friendly.

It's a bar. It's 4 blocks away from the Xcel Energy Center. It has free popcorn. The food is about as good as every other bar locally. If you're looking to pre-game a concert, show, game - McGovern's is great. If you're looking for a nice romantic dinner or to impress a first date, you may wanna look somewhere else.

The hubby and I were attending a class at United this weekend, so we decided to stop at McGovern's for our lunch break. I love the atmosphere at McGovern's with it's exposed brick walls, high ceilings and local artwork and photography. They also have free popcorn, always a plus. The menu mostly consists of sandwiches and burgers and a few soups. I ordered the chicken artichoke sandwich with a side of cottage cheese. The sandwich was tasty, and big. It was a whole chicken breast topped with mozzarella and their spinach artichoke dip. I loved that the dip had whole chunks of artichokes. This sandwich was a winner. My husband ordered a burger with bacon and BBQ and judging by how quickly he ate it, I'm guessing it was good. This place isn't fancy, but they have good food and drinks.

I ventured out to McGovern's on Saturday night during the Sportsman Show/Brad Paisley/Red Bull Crashed Ice frenzy and have to say that I was delighted. Yes, upstairs was packed and I was sweating from trying to navigate around (I was dressed warm for Crashed Ice) Regardless, we got our name on the list for a table. We were expecting to wait an hour but ended up only waiting for about 30 minutes! The service was great, and our food was up fast considering the amount of people in the place! I decided on a Patty Mac and a small salad and it was remarkable! I will definitely make McGovern's one of my go-to places in St. Paul!

Great customer service! I was there on a busy Friday night. A couple weeks later I was going over my bank statement and realized I was overcharged $7.00. Annoying, but not enough money to cause a fit. I thought I'd at least attempt to get my money back, so I called. The owner answered. She very politely researched what happened, apologized, issued me a reimbursement check, and said she speak to the server. I expected a hassle or even a snub, but was met with a very easy encounter! Thank you!

I was a bit apprehensive going to McGoverns after reading the previous reviews. I used to go there years ago and always thought it was OK. Had friends in from up north and they chose McGoverns. I'm glad they did! I had the hot meatloaf with gravy, subbing fries for mashed. It was so huge and quite good. Just like Mom made! Three of us had the fish and chips. It was cod and most excellent. Crispy outside, flaky inside. Malt vinegar was offered and well used. The other two had a chicken club which looked great and the chicken fingers. They were crunchy, peppery and wonderful. Every tray that went by our table looked excellent. All of the food was presented well and everyone there seemed happy. Thanks McGoverns!

Ouch! My liver hurts. A lot. Especially after doing the whole St. Patty's Day Drinking Extravaganza at McGoverns. Apparently St. Paul is the place to be for St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area and there is no better bar to get your day-drink on than McGoverns. It's big. They have drink specials ($5 for a Green Monster/vodka). There's lots of crazy-ass people in their finest green attire (note to the girls in the over the top knee-high green socks and bootie shorts: inappropriate). They have a patio. There's multiple bars. Should be v. good, yes? Erm... not quite 100% what I wanted. See, here's the thing: I like my Irish bars a little more divey and a little less chodebox-y. The clientele seemed of the following mindset: "DUDE! I found this sweet green suit/shirt/sweater/pair of pants and I'm going to wear it on St. Patty's Day at McGoverns. All the bitches will think it's hot. I'm SO getting laid tonight, Bros." Yeah. Totally NOT my kind of people. However, fun is what you make it, right? I was lucky to be with a pretty awesome posse (although how they love this place is beyond me) who kept me laughing and fully entertained all day.

I'm not a fan of bar food. Everyone has it. Went there tonight for early dinner with co-workers. Nothing special, just as I expected. Got the Turkey Pot Pie. It was really good! Light flakey crust. Yummy. Too bad I was too tired and full from the salad to really enjoy it though. One thing though, 4 of us ordered the pot pie, and it was quite inconsistent between the 4 of us. Some had a bunch of peas in their order and some had a bunch of carrots. So-so. Nothing spectacular. If I liked bars, I'd go here once in awhile!

Went here for lunch one afternoon, and didn't go in with huge expectations, being a pub. I guess for what it is, it was an OK experience. Decent beers on offer and a focused enough menu consisting of mainly pub fare (burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, etc.). I had the BBQ Turkey Sandwich, and while it had a decent flavor, it was a touch overcooked, and would have required a bit more sauce to make up for the lack of moisture in the meat. I will say that the waitstaff was very nice and *patient* with my nieces. Just looking for a bit more in the way of execution for my sandwich.

I came here right before a Wilds game. The place was packed from wall to wall on both levels. The place resembled an Irish pub and was full of fun and good times. Being that it was an Irish Pub, I had to get myself a Guinness. Nice tall glass, super cold, and poured the right way. However, I felt the beer was a little watery. It could have be that it's been a while since I've had a Guinness but I remember it being a little more thick. I only had time to order a basket of fries, which were very good. The service that accompanied both the food and the booze was great. Even with a packed house, we got our drinks fast, and our fries in good time. Based on my limited experience here, I'll be coming back to try more food and give a more polished review.

I would add a half star if I could. We went in a group of six: four adults and two children. Coming from a much warmer climate, I was happy to see hot buttered rum on offer. Whenever I travel, I like to sample what I can not get back home, so I opted for the walleye salad. It was good and I appreciate that the dressing is served on the salad. While the food wasn't enough to make me swoon, I liked what I ordered and wasn't disappointed. My husband on the other hand felt the turkey in his sandwich was too dry, but wasn't entirely disappointed either. The service was terrific. The total non-disciplinarians that my in-laws are could've made our experience worse, but our server handled us with grace and patience.

First off this is hands down the best atmosphere (the new patio is amazing and beautiful) in downtown Saint Paul for pub-style (this is a bar) lunch or dinner. The owners are there almost every day, and are very involved in how their business is run. Instead of writing a bad review, people should just ask to have it made right, because I am sure they would do their best to make you happy.

Went with a bunch of co-workers and everyone was in agreement that this place has very good TURKEY. Real turkey, none of the sliced ones in their sandwiches and melts. During my visit, I had the porkchop with fries and side salad (all came with the meal) . The pork looked liked it got stuffed with something (it was faaattt not fatty) but it was all pork chop. Was cooked alright and had OK taste- not the best I've had but it was still good. This place is nice for big groups and they have a nice patio. Price was very reasonable too. My meal was about $13. I've been here for happy hours too and it seems like it's always better to go than lunch ;)

Food was ok. Service was marginal at best. I was the only one sitting at the bar the entire time here and the service was slow. I ordered a cup of chile for an app and it ended up coming out on the same dish as my dinner. Not what I expected. Too many other option out there so doubtful I would go back.

Was visiting someone at United Hospital from out of town. Wandered out to find lunch and bumped into Pats. It was just what i needed. Big Harp at just the right temperature. HUGE bowl of homemade Irish stew with a soft chewy roll. My soul was still hurting from the hospital visit but my body and spirit were soothed by the hearty lunch.

Let's face it: there are establishments in Saint Paul that exist simply because of their location. Places that would fail miserably if they were located in the suburbs, but due to their proximity to attractions in Saint Paul - they thrive. So it boggled my mind when one of these places made a bonehead decision, one that will decrease local traffic. This is what has happened at Patrick McGovern's Pub. Besides its location, McGovern's had two things that set it apart from nearby competitors like Burger Moe's and Eagle Street Grill. They had, and still do have, delicious turkey dishes. The HAD the best patio in the neighborhood. McGovern's had this great patio tucked between two buildings with a view of Seventh. It was large, well landscaped and featured a nice big fireplace. It was the perfect place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon people watching and throwing back a few beers. But, unfortunately, they ruined it. Someone decided to turn it into a dumpy greenhouse, or least that's what it looks like. A while back I noticed a structure going up over McGovern's patio, and I assumed they were setting something up for St. Patrick's day or doing some renovations to the patio. I was shocked to find out that they were covering about 70% of their patio with a glass enclosure. A company call Cabrio Structures specializes in creating convertible living spaces, and they have covered the patio in a glass structure that can be opened up or closed up based on the weather. The company's motto is "Guaranteed great weather on your patio" But once you put a roof on a patio, it's not an f'ing patio! Essentially you have the bastard offspring of a three season porch and a gazebo. The structures seem to work well, but it looks horrible. McGovern's patio is now covered with a series of steel beams and pillars, and no matter how much the glass opens up that frame is still there. And, as if to add insult to injury, there are currently heating lamps strung across the beams. After talking to a couple McGovern's employees, they seemed a bit skeptical of the structure but excited to get a few more weeks use out of the patio each year. So right away, it became evident to me that this is just a move to squeeze a few more dollars out of their customers. Now I have no problem with trying to extend the patio season, but that is what those standing heating lamps are for- you don't build a greenhouse. It just seems like whoever made this decision doesn't get Minnesotans. We love outdoor seating during the summer because there are precious few days when we can do it, and we flock to the best patios in town when the weather cooperates. We don't mind putting on a sweatshirt or wrapping a blanket around us as long as we are outside. We would rather be a little cold and under the stars, than in a steel conservatory with the doors open and a hole in the roof. Personally, McGovern's went from my favorite Saint Paul patio to the end of the line. I would rather go sit in the parking lot at Tom Ried's.

I drank (cider) , I ate (nachos and wings), I talked (mostly about other hockey games and work), and I killed time here pre hockey game. All good but not crazy great. Then the Irish stew I ordered showed up. I wasn't expecting anything memorable. Just something warm. But surprise surprise this stuff is like crack (not that I have done crack...crack is wack ya know). I want more right now. Someone bring me a big bowl of Irish stew. It makes this Irish girls soul smile.

The bartender we had was on his game. Full rail with two bartenders. He remembered my drink, delivered my drink and took payment all within 3 minutes. When I asked for a few waters he was pleasant and prompt. The crowd seemed a little rowdier, it was last call, but all in all it was a great experience.

If you haven't had their turkey before, that's what you need to get! They must cook at least 30 turkeys a day. All of the meals have real turkey in them. Fantastic!

Howdy, partner! County music here. Not the good country western type. Just the pop country garbage. My girlfriend and I went there on Friday night for dinner and couldn't help but notice the music selection. We thought it might have been a fluke so we came back on Saturday night and the same bad music was on. So, we voted with our wallets and went across the street. McGovern's was one of my favorite places for a little while with good food, nice patio seating, and great TVs. Call me a music snob, sure, but I'm just letting you know. If you like pop country, this bar is five stars. If not, join us across the street at Louis.

WOW. Not gonna lie- came here because my beautiful little sister is a waitress here and we wanted to see her in action, and so to have a freaking amazing meal in the process was unexpected, and awesome. I had the turkey melt, and oh... my.... bejesus... so tasty. The turkey was real turkey, not the deli bull that's sliced and processed, but actual off-the-bone turkey, smothered in cheese and a cranberry something-or-rather, all on multigrain bread. It was stupendous. I think i blacked out because I don't remember eating the first half of my sandwich. By the time I came to, the entire thing was gone. I'm obviously biased about the service (high five), but the experience was fantastic, and it was the perfect night to kick it on a patio in downtown St. Paul.

I've visited here on several occasions, and each and every time, I've been quite happy with the food and service. Today as I write this from their patio, I am able to observe that not only is my waitress attentive and friendly, but so are all the other staff members. The manager is scurrying about, helping her servers any way she can: bringing out orders, busing tables, etc. Not sure what's up with the country music in an Irish Pub, but I have hopes that will change.

This is a Pub with a good deal of seating and decent food. The atmosphere is a bit reserved, at least from what I've seen. There is a wide variety of beers and the popcorn is free. I've always found the staff to be considerate.

Oh, it is just one of our favorites. Gotta go for turkey dinner. I think we're going here the day before t-giving next year and then skipping the big meal the day of. It's that good. So much fun to just hang out there. Granted, we go during the day for lunch--not much for the evening scene. The patio area is really nice.

On Wednesday night I visited McGovern's for the first, and probably the last, time. Normally, when I visit that part of Saint Paul for food, I gravitate toward Cossetta's, if I want something fast and inexpensive (and incomparably good), or The Liffey for Irish food, or occasionally (for a special occasion) to The Glockenspiel (the best and most authentic German place in town). However, this time I didn't get to decide, as my aunt and uncle were in town for the Wild game (at which they very kindly let me join them) and chose this one instead. No one really goes here for the food, so I am not sure why I was expecting something better. Maybe it was because I had called to try to see if they took reservations, since it can be busy on game nights, and spoke with one of the managers who spoke glowingly of the food. They specialize in turkey, but it was absolutely the *driest* turkey that I have ever eaten (or tried to). I nearly tried to get a glass of water in which to dunk it, just to get it a little more moist. Ketchup only barely helped. The food was basic, the atmosphere (as expected on game night) loud and it was hard to have a conversation. Basically, I would only really recommend this place if you are starving and can't get a spot at Cossetta's across the street.

I suppose it's been a little while since I've been to this place. I went with my beau who is gluten free and we asked our server, clearly in error, if a particular menu item was gluten free and she snorted at me and him and said she didn't know nor did she bother to check. My beer was overpriced and I remember a split plate charge on an appetizer thats absolutely absurd. Its not like we're some sort of hipster yuppie scum trying to be difficult by asking about gluten free food, its a damn allergy. I wonder if that waitress would have been as rude if we had asked about peanuts? Yeah, I think I'll continue to stay away. I'd rather go to The Glock.

Over the years I've spent plenty of time at United Hospital, and my brother now lives within walking distance of here, but I rarely want to come here. There's nothing really wrong with McGovern's. But when someone suggests it, I kind of wrinkle my nose and try to think of other places we could go. It's an Irish pub, with the requisite pub foods, but a large menu of sandwiches, apps, salads, etc. Their specialty is turkey, which is not really my thing. Happy hour is 4 - 7, $1 off alcoholic drinks, $2 off appetizers. Inside is a multi-room bar with lots of booths and some tables. They use the upstairs when there are events (like Wild games). The outside is actually pretty cool - it's what used to be the parking lot for the costume shop next door. It's two levels, with a small outdoor bar, nice umbrellas, and a little waterfall (which drowns out some of the street noise). There's a small parking lot in back (like, 10 spots), but they're expanding. Otherwise, park on the street. Maybe I'd come here more often if Cossetta's weren't directly across the street :)

Had an out ot town coworker in town, thought PM's would be a nice casual spot for a Wednesday night dinner, especially with the fantastic weather and their fab patio. From the minute we sat down, I noticed tables all around us were vacant and literred with food that needed yet to be cleaned up. Our server ran over to our table, in an absolute panic and was obviously new to serving and was stressed beyond belief. He wasn't gracious or warm, just "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DRINK?", ummm ok... We then had to ask for menus (it was 630-dinner time!). He ran, literally, and grabbed our drinks and then before even putting them down, asked (again in a stressed voice), "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO EAT". Mind you, we'd had literally 2 minutes to look at a menu and we still had not even opened them up-which was obvious. He maybe had 2 other tables, so his behaviour was ridiculous. He then barrelled back and shouted again "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO EAT"...we still had not even touched a menu. This happened two more times and each time we told him we'd let him know when we were ready to order. C'mon dude, take it down a notch! 15 minutes later we motioned to order. We placed his order and I simply asked, which he preferred the chips or fries. He said chips. Ok, fine, I ordered the chips. As he went to put in the order another waitress came by with a tray full of food and the fries looked delish. So I called to our waiter who was 10 feet away, and said, "Do you mind switching my chips to fries". He shouted across the patio, "YOU WANT FRIES NOW????" and actually rolled his eyes! The three of us were appauled. So then we waited for our meal, and in that 20 minutes the waitstaff was so rude, crabby looking, unkept looking and kept slamming, and I mean SLAMMING dirty dishes into a bin at the top of the patio. Crash, BANG, CRASH, I mean it was so loud that you'd jump every time one of them would toss a dish. I mean really? Is that neccessary? Do we all have to listen to dirty dishes being dumped into a filthy bucket outside?! This paired with the female waitstaff having long hair and when they'd carry the large trays of food out on their shoulders, you could see their hair draped over the the tray of food. How gross. Speaking of waitstaff, I ran to the bathroom quick to wash my hands before eating, and enroute to and from the bathroom, I passed a staff member who literally ran me down, never said excuse me, opened the door for themselves and blew through, knocking me into the doorframe. Every server looked mean and angry. And as I wind down this terrible review, to add fuel to the fire, our food came and our out of town coworker had ordered a tuna melt. When her plate was put in front of her, it clearly was NOT a tuna melt. She was scared to say something! Nonetheless, we told our crazy server that this doesn't look like the right meal and he said, "Oh no, that is not a tuna melt...it's a turkey melt, but try it, I think you'll like this much better-it actually is a better choice!" ARE YOU SERIOUS?! He said that?! Clearly, he didn't want to go back to the kitchen and make the correction. Looking at my plate, chips came with my meal, when I changed my order to fries. Our server actually took my coworker's plate that was going back and started to shove with his hands, her fries onto my plate...we sat there in SHOCK! He then realized this wasn't the most sanitary or smart decision and walked back to retrieve my coworker's correct meal. It was an absolute disgusting, stressful and to be honest terribly tasting meal. I'm a true St. Paul girl and love the joints on West 7th...but Burger Moe's and The Downtowner have got this place beat 100x's over. I will never go back for a meal again. EVER. Poor representation of St. Paul for our coworker too. Blech!

I went to Patrick McGovern's with 3 other friends for dinner and time to catch up on our lives. Although we knew it was a sports bar, we went for the food, especially the turkey they are known for. Our service was good and except for a mistake in our order and cold fries (which were quickly replaced) our food was fine. Our complaint was the noise. The TV's were so loud that you could barely carry on a conversation. I had the same problem in the summer on the outdoor patio although no one was even watching the soccer game that was on at the time. I don't quite understand the need for the noise, when you are able to understand a game without narration but maybe that's just me. Anyway, I wouldn't go back. We all left with a headache.

I absolutely love their patio! It could be I'm a huge Twins fan so it's the perfect place to be outside, bellied up, and watching my team play on 3 really nice flatscreen tvs - ALL OUTSIDE! Decent food, funny bartenders and staff, and best of all - customer parking out back! Oh also, for weaker Minnesotans (like myself), if you ask nicely, they bartenders will turn on the heaters above the outdoor bar. This little chick loves heat lamps as I hate being cold!

McGovern's is a good summer time bar! the patio is great, lots of room! the inside on the other hand, gets pretty tight, especially after a wild game! i would either hang out outside or upstairs! stay away from the main bar! Lol!

Oh, mylanta!! Best burgers ever. I had the Buffalo Burger, which was surprisingly the same price as normal burgers. I was smothered with grilled mushrooms, onions and swiss cheese. Got a side of fresh fruit with it and was completely satisfied. Did I mention it was it is a solid 1/2 lbs?! My husband got the 7th Street Burger, and he really loved his as well. Great service. Nice atmosphere.

We were from out of town and visited this bar twice in one day. The first time was about 1-2pm. Service was great and super friendly. We had a few drinks and left. We returned probably about 11pm that night and it was a totally different atmosphere. Place was absolutely kickin. I'm not sure if the bartenders were all drunk or just a lot of fun, but it really made a great vibe. The bar is not really made for dancing but they kept playing a lot of dance music and hot girls would keep jumping up on the bar to dance. If the bartenders were drunk it didn't effect the service cause I've rarely been in bars this packed where I didn't have to wait to get a drink. Great bar experience. Never had any food here, but it looked pretty good. I'll definitely come back here when I return to St. Paul.

Went to McGovern's after a hockey game and found such wonderful late night happy hour deals (on a Saturday!), including dollar beers. For a late night snack I had a great corned beef reuben sandwich on grilled pumpernickel with fries which was very tasty!

I hate to say it folks, but I LOVE Pat's!!! Anyone who knows Pat's, knows you don't go there for burgers. They have real home cooking hot turkey, roast beef, and meatloaf dinners. I have brought many many people there in the past to try these dinners, and all have been very impressed. So much so, that they too, bring friends and relatives there now. The gal that claimed the turkey was too dry, must have had it on an 'off day' or something, because I have never ever had dry turkey there. Always has been perfect. Their cold turkey sandwich reminds me of the day after Thanksgiving. Yummm!! Also I wonder if anyone has tried their Irish Stew. I crave that stuff on a cold wintery or rainy day. If you don't like big chunks of carrots or potatoes or beef, then don't get it. But that is actually my favorite part. This place also seems to have the most creative soups I have seen at a restaurant. My daughter and I know that if we want soup, and not the usual chicken, clam chowder, broccoli cheese, that we can go to Pat McGovern's and get a taste of something that is totally 'out of the ordinary', such as their Rueben Soup. Deeeeeelicious! I have been going to Pat's for years and years. My dad used to go there in the 40's. Forgot what it was called back then though. The Rusty Nail???? Just cannot remember. So this place also has some sentimental memories. I have never had more fun on St. Pat's day as I have when I went to Pat McGovern's. The people that write these bad reviews, just do not understand what a great neighborhood bar is all about. Fun, warm and personable and good parking to boot! Try it again,....you'll like it.

For an Irish pub to serve Fish & Chips that are little more than generic fish sticks cafeteria french fries? They should be embarrassed. Terrible. Sweet potato fries were also below average and the nachos? Even though it's tough to expect much from an Irish pub for nachos (but really, how hard can it be to make good ones?), these were a joke. Green pepper and mushrooms on top of broken Tostitos are hardly worth it, no matter how big the pile of congealed cheese is on top. Even the FREE POPCORN was awful and so salty we couldn't get past the first handful. If you can't make it better than I can at home, why would anyone bother? This is a truly great bar and a St. Paul institution, I realize. But take my advice and stick to the drinks.

Can I tell you a secret? When I was a kid I hated onions. HATE! HATE! HATE! When I'd complain about it, my parents were like, "someday you'll change your mind. Kids don't like onions but grownups do." And I said, "NOOOO! NO WAY! I'LL SHOW YOU! JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE!" Years later, I'm all grown up and guess what? I still don't like them--it's something about the texture. And while I'm not crazy about the flavor, I've learned to tolerate it if I know it's there (for example, I cook with onions, or usually onion powder, so I'm well aware when I've sprinkled it into a dish and I'm ok with that). But one thing I can't stand is being SURPRISED by an onion. If I know/suspect something was prepared in the general vicinity of an onion I can psyche myself up for the encounter and make sure there's a large glass of water handy to wash down the flavor if it gets to be too much. But if someone swings an onion on me when I wasn't prepared for it, I can't handle it. Getting to the point, we stopped here for dinner one weekend night because all the other restaurants in the general vicinity were slammed and we hadn't made a reservation. We figured it shouldn't take too long to get a table and since it's a bar, we definitely didn't have a problem having drinks while we were waiting on food. I ordered a patty melt with no onions. It was busy, but I don't think it's hard to hold the onions on an order so I never feel guilty about this type of special request when I dine out. When it came to the table, it didn't have onions. Score. But after the first bite, I could tell that onions had originally been put on the sandwich because the meat and bread were saturated with onion juice. I'm guessing the cook had added the onions and then removed them right before the food was brought to the table. I didn't want to send it back because that's really petty and pathetic so I just set it down for a minute so I could chug some beer and psyche myself up to eat onion juice (and meanwhile my fiance and all the other onion lovers in the world are laughing at my self-imposed problem) and then forged on. It wasn't too bad, all things considered. Although I did end up eating more of the fries and much less of the burger than I usually do. Onion fiasco aside, I'd say this place is ok. The food wasn't bad for bar food (albeit pricey, but it's by the Excel Center) and we didn't have to wait for a table even though it was 7 p.m. on a Friday night and they were obviously very busy.

if i knew anything about st.paul or where my friend lived in st.paul before heading over, would have gone somewhere better or yelped somewhere better. he is a foreignor in town briefly so not to blame. i have no excuse having grown up in minnneapolis and only going over for the minnesota children's museum and a wedding in a cool library space over there. so i suck. but not as much as this restaurant. things i liked: the waitress- she was good, fast, attentive enough but not annoying though was a little quick to give us the check when we wanted to stay and have a couple more drinks, as she wanted to close her outside section. the merlot- it was under five bucks a glass and a decent pour my friend did eat his whole burger and said it was good but he doesnt get burgers in his country unless at mcdonalds, so im not sure his burger backround is viable. things i didnt like: my cobb salad. WTF. wayyy too much lettuce. i get trying to be cheap on the good stuff like the bacon and blue cheese and turkey, but that much lettuce was insane. i couldnt mix all the stuff from their quadrants cause the lettuce was overflowing. not tasty. at all. when the watiress came to get the plate she asked me if i was really finished, and i said yes, of everything but the lettuce, which stillll filled the bowl. she said that excessive lettuce was an issue that they have all brought up to the person in charge. FIX IT

It has some great benefits and some drawbacks. I like the patio in the summer. Great beer selection. Good deals throughout most of the weeks. It gets packed on Wild nights. When it gets busy it is hard to move anywhere. Overall a good time.

i enjoy coming here on a nice day and sitting on the patio. the bar itself is pretty average. they have two levels and the patio so there's always space. i haven't tried the food. if i'm hungry, i usually end up at cosetta's if it's still open.

Went there on a Sunday evening to get some comfort food to go as my honey was in the nearby hospital and oh so tired of hospital food. He got the Turkey Pot Pie and said it was good. His appetite is not so great so I'll leave any further elabotation on his meal out of the review. I got the open faced turkey sandwich and have to agree with previous poster that while I had 6 healthy slices of turkey breast as I had requested, it was soooo dry. The potato's, while real smashed taters, were lacking in salt and seasoning. The stuffing was not your mama's for sure!! Gummy bread stuffing with very little seasoning. Really, Stove Top would have been more exciting. And to top it off, the gravy was just plain old canned turkey gravy, too salty with that processed flavor that canned cream soups have. I could have gotten this meal at Perkins and perhaps, been more pleased. Yes, it was cheap, $10, but I wasn't looking for cheap, I was looking for good. Thank heavens THanksgiving is just weeks away! Sorry McGoverns. It looked like a really nice place inside and a comfy atmosphere be if your going to headline Turkey, you need a refresher on your turkey roasting skills.

Went here with a couple of people. We ordered the Irish Fries for an appetizer. It was a thick pizza crust with cheese on top and they gave us sauce. Very good! The only good food from the visit though. I ordered Dave's Chicken Sandwich - it was like a chicken paramgiana sandwich. The chicken was fine but the sauce had No flavor whatsoever. My friend ordered the Hot Italian Sandwich was pretty much the same build as the chicken sandwich and the same opinion was made about the sauce - no flavor. This is restaurant is in a nice location - right down from the Xcel Energy center so you can go in and get a bite to eat or a drink before a concert or a hockey game but I wouldn't go in here again otherwise.

Blech!

Paul!

Great burgers, really fast service despite how packed they were before a Wild game. Waitress was really pleasant. Our food came out in 5 minutes, granted we just ordered burgers. We didn't have to wait long for refills either. I recommend coming here before games.

Thank you!

Bartender was beyond rude. She literally yelled at me that the menu was cash only. Never once smiled. I understand she may have been overwhelmed with the crowds but the management should have staffed the bars accordingly. Chicken was ok, French fries were cold. I wouldn't go back here.

    (3)
  • Nic B.

The bartender we had was on his game. Full rail with two bartenders. He remembered my drink, delivered my drink and took payment all within 3 minutes. When I asked for a few waters he was pleasant and prompt. The crowd seemed a little rowdier, it was last call, but all in all it was a great experience.

Blech!

Bartender was beyond rude. She literally yelled at me that the menu was cash only. Never once smiled. I understand she may have been overwhelmed with the crowds but the management should have staffed the bars accordingly. Chicken was ok, French fries were cold. I wouldn't go back here.

The bartender we had was on his game. Full rail with two bartenders. He remembered my drink, delivered my drink and took payment all within 3 minutes. When I asked for a few waters he was pleasant and prompt. The crowd seemed a little rowdier, it was last call, but all in all it was a great experience.
